Danceteria Rewind, which streams on Thursdays from 8pm to 10pm EST (1am to 3am GMT), promises to deliver the various rhythmic genres that comprised the venue’s singular vibe, including reggae, ska, mutant disco, early electro/rap/hip hop, industrial, go-go, underground no wave, JB funk, and more.
As well as helping establish the likes of Sade, LL Cool J, the Beastie Boys, and Madonna, Danceteria was also celebrated for its role in furthering New York’s art scene, with Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat among those invited to create murals for the venue.
“Danceteria was it’s own beautiful thing,” New York nightlife regular Steve Lewis told Vice a few years back. “It was so inclusive of ideas and people, just an incredible burst of creativity. The VIP’s weren’t the most successful or famous people, it was the ones who were on the verge of something.”
Artists featured on Danceteria Rewind include Kraftwerk, the Beastie Boys, the Bush Tetras, Kid Creole, Killing Joke, The Clash, Depeche Mode, the Specials, Cabaret Voltaire, Man Parrish, Yaz, Konk, James White and the Blacks, Material, Yellowman, James Brown, Talking Heads, Telex, Was (Not Was), Quando Quango, 23 Skidoo, Eric B. and Rakim, Liquid Liquid, ESG, Yello, Grace Jones, Run DMC, New Order, Art of Noise – in other words, a vibrant blend of styles from one of the most important periods in music… and nightlife.
“There was fantastic cross-pollination of music styles and genres at Danceteria,” says Danceteria Rewind host Rafe Gomez.
“Clubgoers enjoyed a boundary-free experience that combined rap, reggae, electro, new wave, hip hop, rock, old school funk, salsa, boogaloo, ska, and pretty much anything else that was cool and rhythmic. The DJs spun whatever got the floor moving, and there was no other spot in the world that was so unpredictable and exciting with their soundtracks.”
